Short weekend trip and another visit to the W Downtown Hotel, which sits right across the street from the World Trade Center. Still a haunting sight. It doesn’t feel like it’s been over a decade ago since this all happened.

Jaleo - Washington, DC (the revamped version)

I hadn’t been to Jaleo in DC since the interior was recently renovated. The space is definitely fun and much livelier than the old. I especially love the fuze ball cum dining table. The revamped restaurant also offers a specialized list of house made gin and tonics. The one I tried had solid citrus notes, although I didn’t really taste the kafir lime. Anywhoo.

I went with the classic pan con tomate (a solid option here, with nice crusty bread, good quality aceite and jamón serrano). The sausage was house made - also delicious and well seasoned. The white beans were fried or cooked in oil and I found a little too gritty/crunchy (I think the same preparation as before). I prefer the braised, soft version.

This space is what I imagine Tickets in Barcelona is like. Hopefully, I’ll be able to verify this personally later in the year!

Daikaya - Washington, DC

Daikaya, the recently opened ramen shop in DC, has received a ton of buzz in its short lifespan. I was intrigued to check it out. My friend Krowr gave a lukewarm review of the shio ramen so I went with the shoyu. The broth was full, savory - in short a mouthful of glutamates. Although I loved the char and smokey flavor coming from the bean sprouts, the smoke somewhat overwhelmed the dish for me. What I did love, however, were the noodles, specifically, the Nishiyama Noodles sourced directly from Sapporo. Oh how perfectly chewy and springy in your mouth. I have had nothing better in the States. There was even an article written about the noodles used here. Maybe I’m more of shio person after all. Anyway, I do want to go back and check out their shio ramen.

As well as their izakaya upstairs, as my waiter was kind enough to let me know about. He even brought me the menu. And I love that the menu is stapled into a Japanese magazine.

DC, your food scene is definitely on the up and up!

Who doesn’t love a good roast pork?
Stayed at the W Buckhead recently when visiting our Atlanta office. As with most every W, there is mood lighting galore when you step into the building (albeit nothing compared to the SLS hotels). The first floor has a nice bar on one end, with the reception desk on the other end and lounge in between. The space is actually quite nice to hang out in and the cocktails weren’t bad either. There is a restaurant attached to the hotel, but I didn’t get a chance to check that out.

The rooms were designed by Tom Filicia. Not super moody or over stylized for a W. My particular room looked a little worse for wear, though, with scuffed walls and cracked lacquer on the desk. Still, you can’t beat the rate, at least compared to many other W hotels.

Photo

explore-blog:

I don’t make it out to Atlanta very often since I’m allergic to heat and humidity, but this ended up being a great trip and good intro to Fox Brothers BBQ. I was told to go for brisket and pulled pork (aka the Combo Plate). Now the Combo Plate comes with two sides - and there really wasn’t a choice to be made here - of course I’ve got to get the Fox-a-roni and Frito pie! The Frito pie in particular seems a freak of nature (and the south) but it was oh so good. For those not in the know, the Frito Pie is I think chili and cheese, all dumped into and served in a Frito bag. Hit the spot.
